The Byre

About Our Farm

Joe and Zan Kirk welcome you to the Byre self catering cottage on Low Kirkbride Farm.

The Byre is set on a working organic farm amid the beautiful rolling countryside of Dumfries & Galloway.

We have farmed at Low Kirkbride for 51 years, during which time the farm has changed. The Byre, where we used to milk 40 Holstein Friesian cows, has been converted into a lovely spacious Visit Scotland 4 star self catering facility with Category 1 Disabled Access. Before we moved to Low Kirkbride, cheese used to be made on the farm. This outbuilding has been converted into the Cheese House and is now our family suite which is ideal for large groups and families, or those guests simply seeking a home from home.

The Belted Galloways and sheep, along with the beautiful scenery, can be viewed on our farm walk. The farm animals are very friendly and especially photogenic! We have 184 ewes, with the flock consisting of Jacobs, Berrichon du Cher, Suffolks, Wensleydales and Greyfaces. Between March and June guests are welcome to feed the pet lambs. The pedigree herd of Belted Galloways comprises of 14 cows and 39 young stock. This year we have a red Belted Galloway bull calf, aptly called Red Bull. We also have three ponies which live in the field immediately below the house and the stabling block. Our Khaki Campbell ducks enjoy the freedom of the farm. Fresh duck and hen eggs are available.
